Moving Genovese’s Italian Kitchen into 21st century

By Jewelyn Co

Located at 2900 W. Main St., Genovese’s has been serving the community traditional homestyle Italian food since 1980. Just a few miles from the busy streets of Downtown Alhambra, this cozy Italian restaurant stands at a quieter area of Main Street but still continues to attract crowds.

Renowned Chefs and owners Aricia Alvarado and Hugo Molina have been in the restaurant and food industry for many years and have now added Genovese’s to their lists of many successful business they have handled. Hugo began cooking at the age of 14 and continued his journey as a chef for many famous people and cooked alongside famous chefs across the country. He opened Parkway Grill in Pasadena, where he and Aricia met and began their journey in the food industry together.

When the opportunity to take over Genovese’s came along, they did not hesitate to let the chance go by. They bought Genovese’s in February 2018 and had a re-grand opening in May 2019. “We have been residents of Alhambra for many years, and we always dreamed about having a community restaurant that we could be a part of,” Aricia said. “This place is perfect for us and very convenient. We have run many busy restaurants, bars, and a catering company, and it is time for us to settle at a slower paced environment.” To honor the history of Genovese’s, they felt it was a wise idea to keep Genovese’s name, menu, and its concept while adding approachable twists for the 21st century.

Being among the Top 10 Chefs, with numerous recognitions and awards, Chef Hugo and Chef Aricia bring innovative flavors to Genovese’s dishes with their secret ingredients and creative preparations. From handmade sauces, doughs, and pastas, the dishes are made from scratch with fresh ingredients in-house. Every dish is made to order and crafted timely; worth the wait for the flavors to be more enjoyable. From personal sized to large 18 inch specialty pizzas, diners can choose from extensive toppings or order from their most popular such as the Margarita pizza made with extra virgin olive oil, garlic base, fresh mozzarella, garden picked basil, and tomatoes. For parties and special gatherings and occasions, the jumbo sized 24 inche pizza is available for take-out only. Well portioned with juicy chicken, fresh crisp romaine lettuce, green apples, blue cheese crumbles, and toasted almonds dressed with ranch and curry vinaigrette, the Apple Curry Chicken Salad is one of the house favorites. The shrimp scampi pasta dish is balanced with blended flavors of fresh herbs, butter, garlic, chopped olives, and cooked with sauteed shrimp with white wine, then served over angel hair pasta.

“I’ve been coming to Genovese’s since the 1990s, and I really like the variety of foods they serve, said diner Dominic. “This is a comfortable type of place that you enjoy coming back to because of the great food, and their pizza is not fabricated. You can taste the freshness.”

The beautiful pet friendly and comfortable outdoor seating patio has a nice garden with various kinds of plants they use for herbs and spices. Lunch specials, with 11 items on the menu, are available from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday. Sunday brunch, from 10 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., has added items on the menu such as the Hugo’s Schilaquiles. Seating is walk-in based, so expect to wait for a table for larger parties. Diner specials and deals are affordable with incredible value. Making steady direction toward the 21st century of technology and third party deliveries, Genovese’s will soon be available for deliveries. Order take out by calling them at 626-289-5667.
