There are lots of exercise and recreational options at the YMCA of West San Gabriel Valley, 401 E. Corto St. There is an active and popular aquatics program, exercise machines, a youth health and wellness program, summer camping in the mountains, and much more.
Among other healthy options at the Y are exercise classes, including yoga, Zumba, line dancing, ballet, Latin groove, and tai chi. This month’s Around Alhambra is highlighting the tai chi classes.
At 10 a.m. on Fridays, instructor Eiji Inoue, who also teaches yoga at the Y, begins class by playing some soothing music. The students, 12 to 15 in number, start with warm up and stretching movements that align the energy of the body while relaxing the mind. This takes up the first 20 minutes before beginning the traditional movements of tai chi.
As Mr. Inoue sets an easy pace for his beginners, the more experienced in the class easily move through the ancient and venerable routine. Tai chi was developed as both an exercise regimen and a means of self-defense and is practiced all over the world.
“I’ve been taking this tai chi class for 3 ½ years,” said student Sybil Brown. “Mr. Inoue made me feel welcome right away. I feel much better today both physically and spiritually as a result of tai chi.”
Mr. Inoue has studied the martial arts for more than 30 years, first in his native Japan and then in China. He earned a fifth degree black belt in Chinese kung fu and has won several martial arts championships. He has appeared in television and movies, including Austin Powers III, The Last Samurai, and Pearl Harbor.
The Y is open to everyone who is looking for safe and stress free ways to exercise and improve their quality of life. Check out all that they have for you.
